SUBMISSIONS
If you would like to air our broadcasts and commentaries on your radio station;
reprint our pieces in your publication or on your website; write or produce
pieces for us on a freelance basis, email us at submissions@youthradio.org. If you'd like to submit music for our web radio station, email webradio@youthradio.org.
CLASSES
Training is the cornerstone of Youth Radio. At the heart is the intensive 12-week
course in radio and journalism fundamentals. The people who teach the classes
are some of the Bay Area's most accomplished journalists, audio engineers, and
music programmers.
If you are between the ages of 14 and 17 and wish to join our classes, call
us at (510) 251-1101 and ask for application information. The classes
are free.
Radio
We teach radio broadcasting skills, including engineering, DJing, and journalism.
Students in the program broadcast a weekly 2 hour show on KPFB featuring music,
news, and commentaries. Radio interns produce pieces which air on national and
local outlets such as NPR, KQED, KCBS, and KPFA.
Web
Students can take classes in web production, learning HTML and computer graphics
programs. At the end of the session, students will have created their own homepages.
Interns contribute to our website by writing articles, creating graphics, and
producing animation for the web.
Streaming Audio
Listen to our radio shows on-line! In addition to DJing, we
show students how to edit and process audio so that it can
be streamed over the Internet.
Television
We offer television production classes where students produce compelling features
for media outlets such as California Connected.
Community Outreach
We train incarcerated youth at Camp Sweeney in San Leandro, California and at-risk
youth from Bay Area high schools. Each week our outreach coordinator, accompanied
by a peer trainer, visits a facility or school and teaches music mixing, recording,
and commentary writing.
We also teach students how to DJ in a professional setting,
giving them music as well as business skills. If you would
like to hire us to DJ your next event, contact Erik Sakamoto
at (510) 251-1101 or erik@youthradio.org.
Youth Development
In addition to media skills, we teach students how to facilitate workshops and
become peer teachers. Peer teachers are then able to teach classes at Youth
Radio and become leaders in their community. We also provide college guidance
for our students through our College Bound program, helping to ensure their
academic future.
