“At Youth Radio, I discovered a passion that motivates me to get up in the morning. I now have a clear picture of the kind of work I want to do, and the kind of person I want to be.”
— Melanie Falls, Youth Radio graduate and college freshman |

Ashley Jones, Peer Teacher
A senior at El Cerrito High School, Ashley originally came
to Youth Radio in the summer of 2004 because of her
enthusiasm for music. She quickly developed a new interest
in radio and found herself writing and producing movie
reviews and other cultural pieces.
Ashley recently traveled to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where
she met with other young people from around the country
at a youth media evaluation conference sponsored by the
Time Warner Foundation. She is currently a peer teacher
helping new students develop their writing skills and formulate
on-air roundtable discussions about issues impacting
young people.

Lauryn Silverman, Freelance Reporter
Lauryn is a 17-year-old high school junior from Berkeley,
California. She has reported on a wide range of topics
— from shopping for clothes at Thrift Town, to young voters,
to college finances. Lauryn was recently recognized by
American Women in Radio and Television (AWRT) with
a prestigious 2005 Gracie Allen Award for an unflinching
piece on her struggle with anorexia. “Hunger’s Diary” aired
on National Public Radio.
About her experience at Youth Radio Lauryn says, “I get
to write stories that can turn into something that the entire
nation could potentially hear. That’s powerful. When I won
the Gracie Allen Award, I knew that I had achieved something,
and that I, a young person, was being recognized.
That is rare in this society.”
