Reintroducing The Dukes of Hazzard

"Enjoy the movie for what it is... a fair attempt at bringing back the Dukes of Hazzard, with a modern-day twist."

By Gabriel Long

In Jay Chandrasekhar's latest movie, he takes on the task of remaking the fast-drivin' cult classic TV series The Dukes of Hazard (1979-1985), which is actually based on the 1975 movie Moonrunners.

In this remake, cousins Bo (Sean William Scott) and Luke (Johnny Knoxville) Duke, with a little help from their cousin Daisy (Jessica Simpson) and uncle Jesse (Willie Nelson), egg on the authorities of Hazzard County, Boss Hogg and Sheriff Coltrane. Uncle Jesse is still making the best moonshine in Hazzard County, Georgia, with Bo and Luke responsible for deliveries in their car, "General Lee”. Bo and Luke discover that the crooked county commissioner, Boss Hogg, has illegally been taking their neighbor’s land and that the Duke family farm is next. The Dukes make a plan to save their farm and the town of Hazzard from becoming a coal strip-mine.

The Dukes of Hazzard is definitely a great summer movie. I enjoyed it very much. The script was funny and the stunts were well done. The movie was hilarious. Sean William Scott and Johnny Knoxville were great together and provided lots of laughs and fast-paced action. This is also a great movie for fans of the five man comedy group, Broken Lizard, all of whom make cameo appearances, including Jay and Erik in a parody of one of the classic scenes from Super Troopers.

For people expecting to see a movie based exactly on the original TV series, you may not get what you're looking for. Look, it's an excellent movie on its own but, remember, you're going to ruin it for yourself and others if you decide to compare it to the television series. Music, people and cultures have changed over the last 25 years. Keeping with those changes, and attracting a broader audience base, some things have to be adapted. The bottom line is, enjoy the movie for what it is... a fair attempt at bringing back the Dukes of Hazzard, with a modern-day twist.

For people looking for artistic value and sophistication, you won't find it in this movie. But if you're looking for some summer fun and entertainment, go see this movie, it'll provide both.
