Bay Area Recognition

"Yet I cannot help to wonder how these new Southern artists are featured on 106th and Park and TRL and are even played on our radio stations!"

Listen to this Commentary!

By Brittney Mestre

The Bay Area produces many diverse and tallent musical artists. Yet, few of these artists ever recieve acknowledgment outside of the Bay Area. Youth Radio's Brittney Mestre shares her views on this lack recognition and suggestions of ways to bring attention to local artists.

Have you ever wondered how many Bay Area artist contribute to the music industry and a majority of them don’t get the recognition they deserve internationally? It’s not a question of whether we rep the Bay Area artists. That’s a no brainer. We go crazy!

The issue is how they hardly have any music videos and hardly ever do you see them featured on any music programs such as 106th and Park, with the exception the legendary Too Short and E-40. The videos that do air, if aired at all, most of the time can only be viewed on BET’s “Uncut” and that’s if you got cable or can stay up late enough to watch.

I myself am still in search of the question of who’s to blame for this constant failure of recognition. Yet I cannot help to wonder how these new Southern artists are featured on 106th and Park and TRL and are even played on our radio stations!

Our Bay Area musicians contribute too much talent to not get any recognition. Cars constantly play the latest Bay Area hits around here. Still you don’t even have to be from Atlanta to know what it is to get crunk. But does anybody aside for us Northern Californians know what it is to get hyphy? Get stupid? Go Dumb? Chances are no.

It’s on us to help our artists of the Bay, to get the recognition they deserve. So the next time you want that new Keak Da Sneak or The Team, skip over that bootlegger, show some support, and purchase the albums sold in stores.
