Dance Audition

"I guess what it boils down to is that I’m having difficulty accepting the fact I’m that good a dancer."

By Jazmin Livingston

Discovering a special talent can be rewarding but also intimidating, especially if this talent requires competition and discipline. Youth Radio’s Jazmin Livingston talks about exploring her new found talent, the nerves behind it and the focus she has adopted.

Although I’ve only been dancing for one year, I’ve developed a profound love for hip-hop dance.

Two months ago, the artistic director of a company I take class with asked me to come to his audition. For me, auditioning for a professional dance company was the occasional daydream, but never something I actually imagined doing so soon.

Still, I’m getting some votes of confidence. After each dance class, the choreographer handpicks a very limited number of people to model the dance for everyone else. Then one day I was shocked to find my choreographer picked me to model the dance. This other guy that owns a hip-hop dance studio asked me why I haven’t taken a class there yet.

I guess what it boils down to is that I’m having difficulty accepting the fact I’m that good a dancer.

As the auditions draw closer and closer, I’m taking extra steps to prepare. Even though I hate working out, I stretch every night, and do 160 crunches and ten push-ups before I go to sleep. So we’ll see how it goes. Maybe one of my dreams is about to come true.
