Boondocks

"When we tune in, we know we can count on a great mix of political humor and current events."

By Nico Savidge

The popular award-winning comic strip by Aaron McGruder has finally made it to the screen. The Boondocks recently signed with Sony Pictures to produce an animated series for Adult Swim, Cartoon Network’s late night sister network that features cartoons for adults. Having been a huge fan of this comic strip, Youth Radio’s Nico Savidge was unsure about whether quality and content would get lost in translation. But to his surprise, the television version is just as witty and informative as its comic strip-size counterpart.

What is the best page on the comic strip? I've got to say its Aaron McGruder's The Boondocks.

The strip tells the story of an African-American family, Robert Freeman, and his grandchildren Huey - and aspiring revolutionary - and Riley his eight year old brother - a wannabe gangster. After reading the comic strip everyday for more than a year, I got worried.

I found out that Sony pictures was going to produce my favorite cartoon as a TV show. But after seeing the show, I realized that the soul of the strip had not been lost in the leap to the cartoon network. I mean within one minute of the first episode, a well to do garden party is thrown into chaos, when Huey gets onto a microphone and tells them, Jesus was Black, Ronald Regan was the devil, and the government is lying to you about 9-11.

Every Monday, my friends and I gather over cheap Chinese food to converse about the previous night's episode, trade lines from the show, and speculate what would come the next week. When we tune in, we know we can count on a great mix of political humor and current events.
