Double Charged Investigation Featured on The Atlantic

On May 14, 2014, TheAtlantic.com published Youth Radio's report "Some Kids Get Charged Twice For One Crime."  The piece is part of our yearlong investigation, "Double Charged: The True Cost of Juvenile Justice," which first aired nationally on Marketplace. Youth Radio’s feature for The Atlantic highlights the story of Zoe Mathews, the mother of a young man named DeShawn Morris, who was charged with armed robbery in 2010. Despite serving his time, and his subsequent murder in July 2012, Zoe is still on-the-hook to pay for the cost of investigation and time served on her deceased son’s behalf. “Double Charged: The True Cost of Juvenile Justice” sheds light on policies within the juvenile justice system that require young offenders (and their families) to pay for their own prosecution and incarceration.
