My freshman year, the class that I just dreaded going to was first period health.
Every day we listened to our bra-less teacher drone on about the same thing. Drugs are bad, smoking cigarettes will give you cancer, and most importantly, if you have sex you will die!
I can tell that they have good intentions, but their message and methods do not relate to modern day teens. Most of our “educational” videos were from the 70’s. We see these videos as humorous, instead of informative.
The videos that dealt with underage alcoholism focused solely on people who were introverts and drank in their closets by themselves. But these days, drinking is completely expected at parties, and seeing someone belligerently drunk, throwing up and passing out is nothing out of the ordinary.
In order to fully make an impact on most teens today, they need to present us with dangerous situations that actually happen often, like more realistic ways to deal with a potential drunk driver, or what to do if you have been slipped GHB. Basically, the entire curriculum needs to be updated.
