Rejection or Acceptance

"After all, I hear writing your address 50 times over can be kind of meditative."

By Rachel Krantz

The college application process can be quite stressful for many high school seniors. Personal statements, recommendations, financial aid and scholarships applications-- these are all part of the stressful process, not to mention the waiting period after you've submitted your application. But for Youth Radio's Rachel Krantz, she finds herself less worried about the "where," because she already knows she's one of the many that "will." (February 5 on KCBS)

As seniors wait for collegiate rejection or acceptance, I’ve had a crazy idea that so goes against my normal dogma, that it’s almost heretical: What if the college admissions process isn’t really that horrible?

Sure you have to write essays that explain and sell your self worth in 500 words or less, but is that really what people are really worried about? Maybe my friends and I are disgusted by having to sell ourselves as perfect packages because this is our first exposure to the “real world.”

In the end it’s the sense of powerlessness that gets to us 12th graders. We rule the school, but not our own futures. But hey, it’s a pretty nice problem we applicants have. I feel grateful to be worrying about the “where” I’ll go to college, and not the “if.” So for now, I’m going to try to keep some perspective on my rising blood pressure. After all, I hear writing your address 50 times over can be kind of meditative.
