"Schools should replicate these ideas and use arts in the curriculum. It can add to the quality of students’ lives."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Brandon Sheats

In many schools today dramatic skits are being performed in smelly gyms. And drama clubs are only talking about plays rather than actually performing them. The reason? Test scores. I think schools with low test scores are foolishly cutting the arts. They think focusing on math and reading is the best way to improve scores. They are wrong.

I was involved in a summer program at a local theatre. I learned not only how to act, but also how to think and write differently. Most of all, I learned to keep my mind open to all things. And I never learned that in school. Schools should replicate these ideas and use arts in the curriculum. It can to add to the quality of students’ lives.

A world awaits kids who are given the opportunity to put the paintbrush to canvas…or sculpt…or play an instrument.

In order to improve the state of education, schools should look at the full needs of the student…not just the “reading, remembering and regurgitating” mantra.
