Healthy Food

Basil Fraysse believes it's hard to avoid unhealthy eating habits.

By Basil Fraysee

Recently, while I was watching the news, I saw a segment on the terrible eating habits of today's youth.

The story implied we are all going to die of a heart attack by the time we are 26. But if that's true, it's only partially our fault. Much of the blame goes to the bazillion dollar marketing blitz put out by the fast food industry. Schools are also to blame for selling junk food almost exclusively, with the exception of a federally required "healthy choice."

The reporter gave many possible reasons why no one eats the "healthy choice," but he skipped the most obvious — the healthy choice tastes awful. It consists of a cup of week old salad with a single slice of tomato, a teaspoon of grated carrots and imitation ranch dressing. That is hardly a choice, healthy or not. I know there are plenty of good low-fat foods out there — baked potatoes, spaghetti, even pizza with low-fat cheese and a vegetable. I think young people would like health food if someone could show us that it tastes good, too.
