Eating Disorders

"I started fainting and having blackouts."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Christina Kwong

I was talking to a friend about random things like homework and boys, when suddenly the conversation turned to anorexia.

I’m Christina Kwong, with a commentary from Youth Radio.

My friend said that she just got out of eating disorder therapy. I was shocked. And I got scared when she started telling me about her obsessions with weight because I had similar thoughts in my head. She tried everything from diet pills to throwing up after every meal.

My advice to my friend was to eat more, and not listen to what other people say about her weight. It’s not worth taking shortcuts to the perfect body. I know because after months of skipping lunch and breakfast, I started fainting and having blackouts. My parents took me to the doctor, who scared me into eating every meal. Now, my dad watches me eat breakfast and my mom watches me eat lunch every day to make sure I’m not skipping. And when I see pictures of really skinny models, I realize that that’s not what I want to look like.

For Youth Radio, I’m Christina Kwong.
