I Can’t Drive Right Now

"My freedom’s been signed away by an MD sitting at his desk."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Nora Harrington

I had my permit for about 11 months before I finally took my driving test in February. I passed with flying colors, but now, three months later, I’m not allowed to drive.

I’m Nora Harrington with a commentary from Youth Radio.

I was so nervous that day of the test, because this one event would decide my fate — whether I could have a life or not. I was tired of taking the bus everywhere and having to ask my parents for a ride. They bought me a car for my 17th birthday, and I absolutely love it. I thought things couldn’t get any better.

But on March 23, I had an appointment with a doctor. I’d been having space-outs. The day I saw this new doctor, he told me I had partial seizures…and that I COULDN’T DRIVE.

Now I have to take these pills called Lamictil to help my seizures. And I can only think about driving once I’ve been free of seizures for six months. My freedom’s been signed away by an MD sitting at his desk. I know I probably sound selfish, but I just wish I could feel the wheel between my fingers again.

For Youth Radio, I’m Nora Harrington.
