Vegetarianism

"I’m often hounded by people, asking whether I’m eating enough protein, calcium, and fat."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Charlotte Silver

Sometimes, I think people don’t understand a vegetarian’s diet.

I’m Charlotte Silver with a commentary from Youth Radio.

I’m 16 and I’ve been a vegetarian for half my life. What do I eat? Pizzas, tacos, greens, cheese, bread, cookies… just about everything minus the meat. I’ve never had any difficulty maintaining a complete and nutritious diet. I have no doubt that I am as healthy if not healthier than my carnivorous peers. However, I’m often hounded by people, asking whether I’m eating enough protein, calcium, and fat. And let’s not forget everyone’s deep concern about what on earth I’m going to eat on Thanksgiving.

For some reason, as soon as you take meat out of your daily diet, people get nervous. I wonder if people would worry less about my health if I were just another meat-eater, buying hot dogs in the school cafeteria.

I can’t help but think when people express concern about my diet, they’re really just getting defensive about their own eating habits.

For Youth Radio, I’m Charlotte Silver.
