Job Prospects

"Besides helping the family, it would be a nice experience for me."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Laura Okonokhua

Have you ever thought about getting a job? I am one of five children, being raised by a single mother. So you can imagine we are on a very tight budget. Everyone in the house wants something, and mom has to feed, clothe, bathe, and buy everything for all of us. She only buys the things we need, which makes us certainly not spoiled.

I am the middle child, and I’m 15 - old enough to get an all right paying job. This job could be of a lot of help to my family. I could pay for GAS or maybe take the family out to eat every once in a while. I’m sure there are ways I could help if I had a job.

There’s only one problem – my mom won’t even allow me to apply to work. She has plenty of excuses like, she doesn’t want me out too late and a job will put me back in my schoolwork. I know she says all of this because she loves me, but she doesn’t understand the love I could have for a job. Besides helping the family, it would be a nice experience for me. So there would be a benefit for everyone.

I guess my mom works hard, so I don’t have to and that’s how she likes it. But whenever she needs me she can always count on me.
