Importance of Exposure

"With the help of our school system, some students' dreams become a reality."

By Desmond Delk

Spain, France, scuba diving, exploring cultures, and soccer aren't normal experiences for inner-city students. Just visiting another state could be like making a billion dollars to some people. But with the help of our school system, some students' dreams become a reality. Exposure is the key.

When you are exposed to something, you don't have to rely on someone else's opinion on the subject. You also become well rounded. Someone will say, "This is the greatest place ever," or "Don't even try it, it's so boring." Well, you have to believe that until you try it yourself.

I know at my school, they help you make your own opinions about different endeavors, foods and sports. They offer trips to Spain and France, and the opportunity to serve as student ambassadors through foreign exchange programs. No, everyone doesn't make it to the Atlantic Ocean to do underwater exploring, but by joining the scuba club, you at least get to explore different rivers and lakes in the Southeast.

So, join clubs and be active in school, so that you may one day be the person in the TV.

Desmond Delk is an 11th grader at Mays High School in Atlanta, Georgia.
