Living at Home

"I feel this is what’s best for me."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Ursula Mehl

Taking a year off after high school was one of the biggest decisions I’ve ever made.

Now you may be asking yourself what would ever possess a reasonably smart girl to stay at home for a year when the alternative is the freedom of a college dorm. There really isn’t a simple answer.

If I had to give one I would say that I’m taking a year off because honestly, I’m sick and tired of school. I’ve heard too many stories about people who go to college but end up dropping out after freshman year because they’re just not motivated to do the work. I don’t want that to be me.

I’m not going to lie and say it’s been easy watching my friends leave for their respective colleges. But just as they’re doing what’s right for them I feel this is what’s best for me. I’m doing things now that I would not have gotten the chance to do had I gone straight to college. That, more than anything else, makes me confident that I’ve made the right decision.
