Car Safety

"When I first got my driving permit, I was terrified."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Chelsea Vargas

When I first got my driving permit, I was terrified.

I became concerned about what might happen if the airbag was deployed. One of my responsibilities was to pick my younger sister up from her soccer practices. My mom made her sit in the back seat because the air bags are still dangerous for her. This brought up a whole new fear for me. If safety devices could kill, then the obvious dangers of driving must be even more dangerous than I had originally imagined.

After a while, I just stopped thinking about it. I figured that, in the event of a real emergency, I would react and choose what seemed like the best course of action. I became relaxed behind the wheel, which actually made me a better driver. I wasn’t so jumpy anymore.

When I picked my sister up, I listened to what she had to say about soccer practice instead of tuning her out. I continued to pay close attention to the road, and I always remembered that my life, and the life of others, was in my hands, but I didn’t stress about it every second.
