Fasting

"During the holy month of Ramadan, we as Muslims stop eating from sunrise to sunset."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Ahmed Dirgham

Recently, the news has been focusing on Muslims who are performing the pilgrimage to Mecca. But I can’t stop thinking about Ramadan.

During the holy month of Ramadan, we as Muslims stop eating from sunrise to sunset. Fasting is one of the important rules for Muslims. If you’re a Muslim and you don’t fast, it’s like building a house with only three walls and a roof. If you don’t have the fourth wall, everything will fall apart.

My experiences during Ramadan changed after I moved to the U.S. about three years ago. When I lived in Saudi Arabia, I felt like fasting every day of the year, because it seemed so much easier! There, my friends and I would support each other by hanging out and playing our best sport, soccer, even when the weather was hot. But in the U.S, things are different. My friends here think the idea of fasting is crazy and they think I’m crazy for doing it. But I’m not crazy… I’m doing it for myself.
