Carry The One
Last week, the Senate shelved what’s been called the most important piece of legislation designed to combat global warming. The fate of the bill won’t be determined until next year.

Emerson College student George Watsky —a poet with the San Francisco-based non-profit, Youth Speaks —believes science and art together will inspire people to understand and care for the environment.

Hear George Watsky's poem on our NPR podcast. [4:10]

Racism
It’s the year 2007 and racism still exists. Not just in the south where the Jena 6 incidnet took place, but everywhere, it's just in different forms. Youth Radio's Justin Fossett-Cunningham writes wondering why racism still thrives in this country.

Beautiful
In light of the recent tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, Youth Radio delved into our archives and found this piece by Newbian Productions, a fellow youth media group. Based in New Orleans, Newbian Productions works in collaboration with SAC and 90.7 WWOZ-FM. In honor of Newbian Productions, WWOZ-FM and New Orleanians everywhere, we'd like to share this piece about a young woman finding true beauty in herself and her ancestors.

War in Iraq
Youth Speaks poet and past Grand Slam winner Dahlak Braithwaite reflects on how the war in Iraq has changed its meaning since his brother enlisted in the U.S. Army. Dahlak writes about the personal transitions that have taken place alongside the more public changes throughout the war.

Youth Speak Grand Slam Poems
The high point of the 8th annual Brave New Voices Poetry Festival is the Grand Slam Finals, where teams compete for the title of national youth poetry slam champions. According to Youth Speaks, the Bay Area non-profit presenting the Festival, Brave New Voices is the biggest youth slam in history. This year, the title went to New York City, a team including Jaylene Clark and Kesed Ragin. Listen to their winning poem.

Behind the Scenes of Brave New Voices
"Just imagine…more than 300 poets from around the country, and every single one with poetic flow and funky freshness. This isn’t your parents’ poetry."
