Parents and Profanity

"They say the same vulgar words they fuss at you for using."

By Krista Wilkerson

Many teenagers I'm sure have old school parents who oppose rap music. Their reaction is either to turn the channel or constantly nag you about how it can negatively influence you. In the midst of their ranting they say the same vulgar words they fuss at you for using.

I'm sure parents have their reasons for not wanting us to listen to rap music, but why don't they think about how are they influencing me when they continuously use the same words that are in the rap lyrics they hate? When trying to confront parents about the situation, their response is always, "I can do that, I'm grown." Well I guess I can understand that, right? Well, here's a word to parents: when you do something that's inappropriate and use "I'm grown" as an explanation, that doesn't justify anything. It takes us kids through a loop and makes us think that it's okay to do certain things if our parents participate in it.

Krista Wilkerson is a 12th grader at Banneker High School.
