Plumbing with Dad

Latifah Muhammad takes on a job with her father.

Listen to this Commentary!

By Latifah Muhammad

I was four years old when I decided to be a plumber, like my father.

I'm Latifah Muhammad with a commentary from Youth Radio.

It wasn't plumbing itself that attracted me to the profession. It was that fact that my father was a plumber that made it more interesting. I thought he was the strongest, smartest man in the world.

As I got older, I noticed my father never took me with him to work on jobs. I'm pretty sure it was because I'm a girl. So I was a little surprised when my dad asked if I wanted to work with him this summer. I said yes, mostly because he paid well.

Toilets smell really bad, but I just had to humble myself. Toilets are also heavy, and my body was tired and sore by the end of that first day. But now that I've been at it for weeks, I'm more comfortable.

Now that the summer is ending, I'll have to stop working with my father and get a job near my college. Even though I'm not a little girl anymore, I still look up at my father with big questioning eyes. He's still is the strongest and smartest man I know.

For Youth Radio, I'm Latifah Muhammad
