On Mother’s Day, I think about my grandmother a lot and the kind of relationship we had. My grandmother passed away when I was 13, but in some ways, she was as much of a mother to me as my Mom. Her name, Catalina, is my middle name. My sisters and I used to call her Mama, “Mama Cata”. She was the person in my family who always stuck up for me, even when I wasn’t getting along with my Mom or my older sister. They say she used to spoil me.
I remember the way she laughed, and the sweet little things she used to say to me in Spanish, like “te quiero mucho, Mija”, which means “I love you, my daughter”. Now that she’s gone, I think about her all the time. Especially when things aren’t going well between my Mom and I.
This Mother’s Day, I’m going to think about how I can make my relationship with my Mom more like the one I had with Mama Cata. My Mom always says I can’t understand her because I don’t have children of my own. So whenever I do have children, I hope to be patient and a good listener for them, like Mama Cata was for me.
