Why I Still Love Allen Iverson

"When people see me still wearing his jersey, they are appalled."

By Memi Vaughn

A true sports fan sticks with their player through the good and the bad. That's why to me, Allen Iverson is still the man.

A few months ago, the 76ers star was in the news for allegedly making "terroristic threats." But I have remained loyal, despite the fact that the charges stemmed from an altercation with his wife. I think Iverson works hard at being a strong, powerful, basketball player. He is very talented and being the crazed fan that I am, I have learned to separate Iverson and his personal life.

Sometimes I have to remind myself why I am so dedicated to Iverson in the first place. When people see me still wearing his jersey, they are appalled. I've been asked, "How could you wear that jersey, being an African American woman?" I reply that as an African American woman, I believe that you are innocent until proven guilty.

Like Iverson, there have been many famous people involved in public scandals including Mike Tyson, Latrell Spreewell, Michael Jackson, and even former President Clinton. Eventually, the scandals all blew over. People often forget that even though you are a celebrity, you are still human and allowed to make mistakes. I have learned through watching the media that eventually Iverson's story will be out of the spotlight, like all the rest.

But he'll never lose his talent on the court, and as a fan, that's what matters the most to me.
