Seeking Inspiration On Social Media (@trystella)

Here’s what I post on social media: silly videos, pictures of my friends, and my art. I know I shouldn’t get caught up in how popular my artwork is on instagram. But it’s hard to stop myself.

A few years ago, I discovered that becoming a designer for films and video games, is a career choice. I signed up for an art class at a local community college. Since then, drawing has become a habit, a passion, and a goal.

Last year, a friend suggested I post my work to instagram as way to get some recognition. As I started to build a following, I became concerned about likes. Whenever I posted fan art of characters from popular video games, they got way more attention than my own original work. A figure drawing that took me five hours hardly got any likes at all.

It’s hard to create a distinctive creative voice amidst all the social media clamor. Yes, instagram is a great tool for recognition. but if I’m not careful, it’ll steer me in the wrong artistic direction.
