Youth Radio believes that under the right conditions and with the necessary supports, young people are makers of powerful media, technology, and community. By providing hands-on production projects with top professionals and peer collaborators, we offer unique opportunities for technical, professional, and leadership development. Our programs are structured around progressive curricula, helping young people develop marketable skill sets that lead to expanded education and career opportunities.
High school students between the ages of 14-18 are eligible to apply for our in-house training programs. After 6 months, students are eligible to apply for paid internships in all departments at Youth Radio.
Introductory training, Core:
Students spend three months surveying the disciplines of Journalism, Music, and Multimedia. Students assume a variety of production roles and put on a weekly radio show. Class meets Wednesday and Friday afternoons.
Intermediate training, Bridge:
Designed for Core graduates to further develop their media and tech skills by specializing in any one discipline of Journalism, Music, or Multimedia for 3 months. Students graduate with a capstone project, a digital portfolio, and a professional resume. Class meets Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
Supplemental training, MATCH:
Funded through the City of Oakland’s Oakland Unite initiative, high school students who are justice-involved and Oakland residents are eligible to participate in two additional days of training. Students develop professional development and pre-employment life skills through producing a community engagement multimedia project. Students receive a stipend for participation. Oakland Unite is funded primarily by taxpayer dollars through the Oakland Public Safety and Services Violence Prevention Act (Measure Z).
